My Low-Budget Home Lab Setup: A DIY Tech Adventure

With some affordable hardware and a little ingenuity, you can create a system that serves your needs without breaking the bank. The Core of the Setup

Innotech EmBox Mini PC Running Proxmox

The compact Innotech EmBox mini PC, seen on the right, is the brain of my setup. Running Proxmox, it handles virtualisation effortlessly, allowing me to create and manage virtual machines and containers. This versatility makes it ideal for hosting applications and services on a tight budget.

Hikvision NVR

The Hikvision Network Video Recorder (NVR), positioned under the monitor, is dedicated to surveillance. It connects seamlessly with my security cameras, keeping the footage separate from other tasks to ensure uninterrupted performance.

Networking Backbone

MikroTik HEX R3 and RB951Ui

Below the desk, you’ll spot my MikroTik networking devices. The HEX R3 is my primary router, known for its reliability and advanced routing features. Alongside it, the RB951Ui provides wireless access point functionality, ensuring seamless connectivity for devices across the house.

TP-Link EAP Outdoor

While not visible here, the TP-Link EAP Outdoor is part of the setup to extend my network outdoors. It’s a lifesaver when working in the garden or lounging on the patio with stable Wi-Fi.

Xiaomi Mesh System

Inside the house, the Xiaomi Mesh system provides consistent Wi-Fi coverage. It eliminates dead zones and maintains a strong signal for all connected devices.

Storage and Expandability

Orico Enclosure Mounted to Proxmox

To manage storage needs, I’ve connected an Orico external enclosure (seen on the left of the monitor) to the Proxmox server. This setup is a simple, cost-effective way to expand storage without splurging on a dedicated NAS just yet.

Docking Station for Drives

Also visible on the desk is a dual-bay docking station for additional drives. It’s perfect for quick access to spare drives or backing up data when needed.

While this setup works great for now, there’s always room to grow:

Adding a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) would protect against unexpected power outages.

Upgrading to a dedicated NAS could streamline storage management.

Installing network monitoring tools would provide better oversight of traffic and connectivity.
